Officials Investigate Nuclear Materials in Dutch Port City

Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency traveled to the Netherlands this week to investigate a shipping container that was found to have contained a small amount of uranium oxide, Dutch officials said yesterday (see GSN, Dec. 30, 2003).

About two pounds of uranium oxide was found inside a container at a scrap metal company in Rotterdam, Dutch officials said. The findings of the IAEA team have yet to be released, according to the New York Times.

An official from the scrap metal company was quoted by a Dutch newspaper as saying that he was “99.9 percent certain that this stuff is actually from Iraq.” A spokesman for the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment said, however, that “the only thing I know for sure is that this shipment was sent from Jordan” (Gregory Crouch, New York Times, Jan. 16).
