U.S. Court Stops Release Order for “Dirty Bomb” Suspect

A U.S. federal appeals court yesterday issued a stay of its order for the release of Jose Padilla, who was arrested in 2002 over allegations that he was involved in a plant to detonate a “dirty bomb” within the United States, according to Reuters (see GSN, Jan. 8).

In December, the court ordered the Bush administration to release Padilla, a U.S. citizen who has been designated as an enemy combatant, within 30 days. The U.S. Justice Department, though, had asked the court to delay its order and appealed the court’s ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court (Reuters/Washington Post, Jan. 23).
