Pakistani Cabinet Approves Draft Export Control Bill From Thursday, May 6, 2004 issue.

Pakistani Cabinet Approves Draft Export Control Bill

The Pakistani Cabinet yesterday approved draft legislation to establish a national export control system for WMD- and missile-related equipment and technologies (see GSN, April 29).

The bill, which would next be sent to the Pakistani Parliament, calls for penalties of up to 14 years in prison, a fine of up to $285,000, or both for violators, according to Agence France-Presse. The bill was created in response to a recent U.N. Security Council resolution calling on U.N. members to prevent terrorists from obtaining weapons of mass destruction, officials said.

“The draft bill manifests Pakistan’s strong commitment to the prevention of proliferation of nuclear and biological weapons and missiles capable of delivering such weapons,” an official statement said (Agence France-Presse/SpaceWar.com, May 5).
