CIA Indicates That One-Third of Senate Report on Prewar Intelligence Should Remain Secret

The CIA has determined that about one-third of a report on U.S. prewar intelligence on Iraq prepared by Senate Select Committee on Intelligence should remain classified, intelligence sources said yesterday (see GSN, June 15).

The intelligence agency returned the 400-page report to the committee with indications that as much as 40 percent of the information contained within should remain classified, according to sources. One intelligence official said that the noted sections contained information on sources and intelligence-gathering methods.

Some lawmakers, however, were unhappy about the amount of information the CIA restricted, according to Reuters.

“I think they (CIA) went way overboard. Clearly what they are doing is taking the heart of the report out of it,” Senator Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) said.

The committee is expected to vote tomorrow on whether to approve the report, said committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-Kan.). He added that it was unlikely that the report would be released next week, “not the way things are now” (Tabassum Zakaria, Reuters/Yahoo!News, June 15).
