Russia: Germans Pledge Funds for Kambarka Destruction Facility Germany plans to help Russia build a chemical weapons destruction facility in Kambarka, in the Udmurtia Republic, Interfax reported Monday (see GSN, June 12). German experts visiting Moscow recently discussed nonproliferation and disarmament projects that Germany plans to fund in 2003, according to Interfax (see GSN, Aug 22). The funding is part of a pledge that Germany made at a Group of Eight summit earlier this year (see GSN, June 28). “The global partnership established at the summit to counter the proliferation of weapons and materials of mass destruction gives priority to providing Russia with large financial assistance to help it dispose of its chemical weapons,” said Zinovy Pak, general director of the Russian Munitions Agency (see GSN, Nov. 25). “Our talks with German experts have come as the first step in implementing the agreements that G-8 leaders reached at their summit in Canada this summer,” he added (Interfax News Agency News Bulletin, Nov. 25).
