Washington Might Station Missile Defense Systems in Eastern Europe

The U.S. Defense Department might station missile defense systems in Eastern Europe to defend against a possible attack from Iran, Germany’s Sueddeutsche reported today (see GSN, Oct. 8).

Citing senior U.S. State Department sources, the newspaper said that the United States might pursue bilateral missile defense agreements with individual countries in exchange for economic incentives.  Washington would deploy the systems in 2006.

Romania and Bulgaria could be the “first choices,” according to U.S. defense expert Benjamin Schreer of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Sofia Morning News, Oct. 10).
