Latvian Secret Service Recovers Radioactive Material From Monday, October 27, 2003 issue.

Latvian Secret Service Recovers Radioactive Material

The Latvian secret service has recovered radioactive materials, a spokesman for the country’s Constitution Protection Office said last week (see GSN, Oct. 17).

Several people have been detained in connection with the recovered materials, spokesman Dainis Mikelsons said. He added that the recovered material had been taken to a radiation safety center for identification.

“The control of radioactive substances is important in the light of the fight against international terrorism. Seizing them means averting threats to security of the state,” Mikelsons said (Agence France-Presse/SpaceWar.com, Oct. 23).
