India Delays Agni 3 Missile Testing

India has postponed testing its nuclear-capable, long-range Agni 3 ballistic missile, an Indian official said today (see GSN, Sept. 23).

In April, Indian Defense Minister George Fernandes said that Agni 3 tests would be conducted by the end of this year (see GSN, April 7).

Meanwhile, “the preparations are in full swing, but the tests will be carried out early next year,” said V.K. Aatre, scientific adviser to Fernandes (Agence France-Presse, Oct. 29).

Also, India today conducted a successful test of its BrahMos anti-ship cruise missile, according to the Times of India (see GSN, May 2). The BrahMos, which was jointly developed with Russia, has a range of 300 kilometers and can carry a 200-kilogram warhead (C.R. Jayachandran, Times of India, Oct. 29).
