U.S. Response: China Formally Joins Container Security Initiative China has formally agreed to join the U.S. Container Security Initiative, U.S. Customs Commissioner Robert Bonner said last week (see GSN, July 23). Under the agreement, U.S. inspectors will be stationed at the Chinese ports of Shanghai and Shenzhen, which account for eight percent of all sea containers that enter the United States. With China joining the CSI, countries representing 19 out of the top 20 ports in the world have now joined the initiative, Bonner said (U.S. State Department release, Aug. 5).
