NRC Proposes Fine for Radioactive Material Control Violations The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has proposed a $7,500 fine against IBS of America for violations of radioactive material control requirements, the commission announced last week (see GSN, July 22). In a letter sent to IBS of America, NRC Administrator Luis Reyes said a commission inspection had found that the company had sent gauges containing radioactive material to individuals without first verifying that they were authorized to receive such material. The NRC has also cited the firm for failing to control and maintain constant surveillance of licensed radioactive material. The fine has been proposed to reflect the significance of the violations, according to an NRC press release. The firm has 30 days from receiving the letter to either pay or contest the fine (U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission release, Sept. 16).
