Brazilian Police Recover Radioactive Material

Brazilian police yesterday announced the recovery of 600 kilograms of radioactive material found inside a truck, according to the Associated Press (see GSN, Aug. 18).

While the material was recovered in early July, recent tests confirmed the presence of uranium and thorium, said Luiz Carlos Nobrega, the federal police officer in charge of the investigation. The material was found sealed in plastic inside a truck and is believed to have been ready for sale, AP reported. Nobrega, though, said he did not believe the material was intended for terrorist attacks.

The intended buyer for the mineral was not known. Police arrested one man, but are still looking for other potential suspects and for the area where the material was mined (Associated Press, Aug. 24).
