Belarus: Chain of Custody Developments

10/1/96: MC&A: UPGRADES COMPLETED AT SOSNY
DoE reported the completion of the new materials control and accounting system upgrades at the Sosny Science and Technical Center. Sandia, Los Alamos, and Argonne National Laboratories participated in designing the system, which complies with international norms for MC&A systems. Japan and Sweden also assisted in funding the project. Security upgrades included a video monitoring system, an alarm system, radiation detectors, and physical barriers such as turnstiles, fences, and reinforced doors.

7/10/96: EMERGENCY RESPONSE: REMOTE SENSING LAB OPENS

The Belarusian Embassy to the US announced that a remote earth-sensing laboratory installed in an airplane was officially opened. The lab is part of the Emergency Response Training and Equipment project of the CTR.

7/93: EXPORT CONTROL: $16.26 MILLION ALLOTTED

An export control agreement under the Nunn-Lugar umbrella agreement, signed on 10/22/92, was modified in 7/93. The agreement will help prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and related materials and technologies. DOD will provide training and equipment for interdiction, detection, administration and enforcement, network automation, communication and border posts.

10/22/92: EMERGENCY RESPONSE: UMBRELLA AGREEMENT SIGNED

The US and Belarus signed the first agreement under the Nunn-Lugar umbrella agreement, providing $5 million for emergency response equipment and training.
