History: Founded in 1993 as part of Al-Azhar University. Activities: The center is currently carrying out research various subjects such as the biosynthesis of new forms of antimicrobial agents, metabolic regulations of mycotoxins production, fungi and allergy and fungal biotechnology, and biodegradations and biotransformations and enzymes.
The center contains the following pieces of equipment: an amino acid analyzer, a capillary electrophoresis, a fluorescence detector, a gel electrophoresis rig, an image analysis system, a gel documentation system (this is typically a fancy flat-bed digital scanner), a spectrophotometer with data system (computer), a GLC, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) system, an ultracentrifuge, an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, and a lyophilizer.
The center maintains collaborative agreements with the International Mycological Institute in the United Kingdom, certain Egyptian universities, and universities located in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, and Austria.
The center currently publishes the International Journal entitled The African Journal of Mycology and Biotechnology, as well as the Mycology Newsletter, which is published in Arabic.
