Description: This laboratory scale UO2 fuel fabrication facility was constructed indegenously by the Egyptian AEA with assistance and equipment from the Federal Replublic of Germany. Construction may have been completed in 1987. However, it appears that the facility did not become fully operational until 1990. It was built to experiment with the processes of producing PHWR fuel.

Primary Function: Production of nuclear fuel for the ETRR-2 research reactor
Description: The Fuel Manufacturing Pilot Plant (FMPP) supplies Egypt's Multi-Purpose Reactor (ETRR-2) with the necessary nuclear fuel elements for its operation when needed. The ETRR-2 uses MTR plate type (19.75% uranium enriched) fuel elements. The plant was designed and constructed by INVAP and became operational in May 1998. The plant's capacity is reportedly either 24 or 40 fuel elements per year, which is sufficient for the continuous operation of the reactor.
