Location: Taji camp, approximately 40km NE of Baghdad city center Subordinate to: Ministry of Defense, Iraqi Air Force Primary Function: Repair, maintenance, and testing of aircraft gas turbine engines
Description: Taji Engine repair facility was located within the sprawling Taji camp and was, therefore, situated near a variety of important missile-related sites. The facility was specifically designed and built to maintain Soviet aircraft and, thus, much of the original equipment is of Soviet origin. UN missile inspectors were particularly interested in the turbine balancing machines and injector test chamber, although a series of teams determined that the equipment was not particularly well-suited for missile applications. However, due to the site's general capabilities and proximity to other important facilities, it remained on the monitoring list, though at a low priority.
