Mt. Kanggamch’an Missile Base (강감찬산 미사일 基地)

Other names
: Kanggamch’an-san Missile Base, Kanggamch’an Missile Base

Location: According to defector Im Yŏng Sŏn, Mt. Kanggamch’an (Kangamch’an-san) is located on the opposite side of the Kanep’o Fisheries Cooperatives in Chŭngsan-kun (甑山郡), South P’yŏng’an Province (平安南道) [Note: The location has not been confirmed.]

Subordinate to: Missile Division (미사일 師團), Ministry of the People's Armed Forces (人民武力省), National Defense Commission (國防委員會)

Primary Function: Deployment and launch of intermediate-range missiles and surface-to-ship missiles

Description: According to defector Im Yŏng Sŏn, North Korea completed construction of an intermediate-range missile base and a surface-to-ship missile base at Mt. Kanggamch’an around 1985 and in early 1990 respectively. The geographical locations of Mt. Kanggamch’an and the Kanep’o Fisheries Cooperatives have not been confirmed. The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) has tentatively placed this facility in the Kangnam mountain range near the Sakchu chemical weapons production facility in North P’yŏng’an Province. However, the South Korean Ministry of Unification has indicated that North Koreans could sometimes use geographic names such as “Kanggamchan-san” that are different from official government names.
