Yugoslavia Nuclear Facilities

Waste Management
Name: Radioactive Waste Treatment Facility
Location: Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Vinča
Subordinate to: Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Vinča
Size: Multiple sites
Primary Function: Management of low and intermediate level waste
Description: There are at least two, perhaps three, or more solid waste storage areas attached to this facility. In 1998, scientists reported that there was one storage facility almost completely full, which held radioactive waste materials, packed in metal drums and plastic barrels. The second facility still had available space, which was thought to be able to handle radioactive waste for the coming few years.[1] Also in 1998, scientists at the center were immobilizing waste to determine bitumen-radioactive mixtures to satisfy necessary safety requirements. From these results, three types of bitumen were used and immobilization matrices, depending on the various weight percentage values of the spent ion-exchange resins were being considered for disposal.[2]
