Establishing a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone

Establishing a NWFZ involves a number of steps. Considering the distinct histories and concerns in each treaty's zone, the process for establishing NWFZs varies among regions.

 

Steps to set-up a NWFZ generally include:

 

1) Initial regional initiatives and consultation;

2) Negotiation and drafting between interested parties;

3) Adoption of the draft treaty text;

4) Signing the NWFZ treaty by relevant parties;

5) Ratification of the treaty by national legislatures; and

6) Entry into force of the NWFZ treaty.
