The Pacific Rim Spent Fuel Management Partnership met in Albuquerque, New Mexico at Sandia National Laboratories to operationalize new working groups.

In February 2019, international nuclear waste specialists participated in a two-day workshop of the Pacific Rim Spent Fuel Management Partnership in Albuquerque, New Mexico at Sandia National Laboratories. The aim of this workshop was to operationalize new working groups to address specific topics of mutual interest identified through preceding workshops:

  • technical and non-technical aspects of repository siting;
  • long-term monitored dry cask storage and transportation;
  • knowledge management;
  • underground research facility R&D.

The workshop also included a tour of Sandia National Laboratories.

This workshop was one of a series in a DSFS initiative to bring together Pacific Rim nations facing end of the nuclear fuel cycle challenges and share relevant information, identify issues of common interest and work toward cooperation on those topics that can provide meaningful benefits to the participants’ waste management programs.
